Canterbury Cathedral is the main reason that most tourists come to Canterbury. This stunning early-Gothic structure was founded back in 597AD and is well respected as the Mother Church of the Anglican Communion. It is an important place of the pilgrimage after Archbishop Thomas Beckett, later named St Thomas the Martyr was murdered in the cathedral by four knights back in 1170.
Like Canterbury Cathedral the nearby St
Augustine’s Abbey is also an important UNESCO
World Heritage Site. Named in honour of St Augustine who
was sent by Pope
Gregory to Britain reintroduce Christianity to England,
it was originally founded in 597AD and rebuilt in the 11th
century it was later sadly dissolved under the orders of
Henry VIII.
The Roman Museum is located underground at Butchery Lane on the site on an original Roman town house. Many Roman artefacts can be seen on display as well as the wonderful Roman mosaic floor, whilst interactive computer displays and a reconstructed Roman style marketplace complete the appeal.
Carrying on the strong religious theme of Canterbury is St Martin’s Church, which is thought to be England’s oldest parish church. It was built for Queen Bertha, wife of King Ethelbert, as somewhere for her to worship and was used by St Augustine himself before the abbey was built.
The Canterbury Tales experience is like stepping back in time to medieval Canterbury to hear the stories told by Chaucer’s wonderful characters in Canterbury Tales. During your visit you are taken on an exciting journey from the Tabard Inn in London all the way to Canterbury with entertaining tales and amusing wax works en route.
